A day after writing a binding opinion that Minnesota school districts cannot block students from graduation ceremonies over unpaid lunch debt, Attorney General Keith Ellison says he understands that for the districts…

“Unpaid school lunch debts are a problem for them, I am sensitive to that, I’m not suggesting that you cannot collect the debt or try to recover it in some way, but you can’t do that by denying graduation participation.”

Ellison issued a written opinion citing two state laws governing school lunches and lunch aid. He says his opinion came at the request of state Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker, who mentioned that her office is receiving calls from parents concerned about the practice.
