For the first time, the World Health Organization has officially classified workplace burnout as an occupational phenomenon. Dr. Tom Kottke with HealthPartners:

“The important thing for the employer, particularly in a very tight job market is to deal with this and watch for signs of it among his or her employees.”

Signs of burnout include disengagement, fatigue, and low productivity. Ways to prevent burnout — encourage employees to take their vacations and really unplug. Discourage check-ins by email or telephone. Implement the “only if the building’s on fire” rule of when to contact an employee on vacation.
