“Mental Illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun.”
Sue Aberderholden head of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Minnesota says she was disappointed President Trump made this comment following the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio. She says it paints people with a mental illness with a really broad brush:
“Mental illness impacts every race, every ethnicity, every age. Doesn’t matter whether you are a male or female. It impacts everyone. But we don’t have those same types of issues in terms of mass shootings in other countries. And so it’s a simplistic answer to a complex problem.”
Abderholden says only four-percent of violent crimes are committed by people living with serious mental illness.
