1. “Doctor Sleep“ (R)
This is a sequel to Stephen King’s “The Shining”. It stars Ewan McGregor as a grown-up version of Jack Nicholson’s psychic son, Danny Torrance. Forty years after escaping the Overlook Hotel, Danny’s still struggling with the trauma of that night.
After he stops using alcohol to suppress his abilities, he gets the nickname of Doctor Sleep while using his powers to help dying patients pass peacefully.
But when he meets a young girl with powers as strong as his, he has to protect her from a cult that wants to feed off her psychic energy. They’re led by Rebecca Ferguson. The kid is played by a newcomer named Kyleigh Curran.
2. “Midway“ (PG-13)
The Battle of Midway took place in June of 1942, six months after the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and two months after we retaliated with an air raid on Tokyo. It’s considered “the most decisive blow in the history of naval warfare.”
Ed Skrein stars in it as Navy squadron commander Dick Best and Mandy Moore plays his wife. Woody Harrelson is Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Nimitz, and Aaron Eckhart is Air Force General Jimmy Doolittle, the guy who led the Tokyo Raid.
Veterans Day is this Monday by the way. The rest of the cast includes Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, Darren Criss, Alexander Ludwig, and Dennis Quaid.
3. “Last Christmas“ (PG-13)
An awkward romantic comedy written by Emma Thompson, directed by Paul Feig from “Bridesmaids”, and set to the music of George Michael.
Emilia Clarke from “Game of Thrones” is struggling to make sense of her life until she meets and falls for Henry Golding from “Crazy Rich Asians”. Emma plays her mom, and Michelle Yeoh is her boss at the Christmas store where she works as an elf.
