Earlier this week, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order creating a climate change subcabinet. Walz says the subcabinet will advise him on cutting the state’s carbon footprint and will make sure the state is ready to deal with the effects of climate change

“We have to make sure our people are ready when pathogens live longer, allergy season lasts longer, when potentially more topsoil will runoff,” said Walz. “We’re going to have to do that whether the rest of the world does anything or not.”

Walz sees economic development opportunities through the initiative

“When we show that an economy can grow while reducing carbon emissions that’s a good model to follow,” said Walz. “There are free-market solutions to this, there are opportunities to make wealth by doing the right thing.”

Walz will also establish a Governor’s Advisory Council on Climate Change.
