The Minnesota Department of Health is not recommending Minnesota schools close at this time due to COVID-19. Spokeswoman Kris Ehresmann says none of the state’s nine cases involve school-age children. She says closing schools would have a ripple effect:
“Closing schools means that a large number of parents need to stay home with their children and many parents are healthcare providers and so closing schools also have an impact on our healthcare system.”
Ehresmann says looking at the global data, individuals 19 and under are at the very lowest risk of COVID-19. Only two percent of overall cases have occurred in this age group.
