Pet owners are encouraged to follow these reminders to ensure pets and people have a safe summer:
Keep pets on a leash.
Dogs and cats must be on a leash no longer than 10-feet long when not on owner’s property. Exception: Dogs may be unleashed under supervision at the dog parks located at Kiwanis Recreation Area, 2301 US-169.
Register your pets.
Dogs and cats more than six months old (that reside in Mankato longer than 60 days) must be registered with the city of Mankato. There is no cost. During building closures due to COVID-19, register online or contact staff at 311 or 507-387-8600.
Pick up after your pet.
Cleaning up after dogs shows courtesy to neighbors, reduces exposure to parasites, keeps storm drains and local water systems free of these pollutants and enhances neighborhood livability by keeping the yard, boulevard and park clean. Owners are required by law to clean up animal waste on public and private property and asked to remove it from their yards and then dispose of properly.
Be responsible for your animal.
Pet owners have a responsibility to ensure their animals are not a nuisance to others. Habitual barking, chasing individuals or vehicles, damaging property, or pestering people not on its property are considered nuisances. Pet owners must also vaccinate dogs and cats (more than 12 weeks old) against rabies.
For more information visit the animal control web page or contact staff at 311 or 507-387-8600.
