Two Republican state senators — Carla Nelson from Rochester and Bill Ingebrigtsen from Alexandria — are asking the Minnesota Historical Society when the statue of Christopher Columbus, toppled by indigenous protesters, will be returned to the State Capitol grounds. Nelson acknowledges the statue should be reinstalled with a reinterpretation of the historical record — but says protesters should not be allowed to tear down state property just because they don’t like it:

“This is not support or indictment of Christopher Columbus — it is support for law and order.”

Minnesota Historical Society officials have not yet commented. Nelson also accuses the Walz administration of not protecting the statue despite getting advance notice of protesters’ plans. And Nelson contends the demonstrators have not been properly prosecuted.
