About a billion dollars in tax relief, including businesses who got loans under the Paycheck Protection Program, plus workers’ COVID unemployment benefits — a major feature of a state budget deal Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders announced today (Mon):

“The goal is to try and get most of this wrapped up towards the end of May — give some time to write these things up and check that — and then when we come back in June, being able to wrap up this year’s budget.”

That would probably happen around June 14th.  The governor will decide how to spend 500 million dollars of federal COVID aid, with the remaining two-plus billion decided by both the legislature and the governor.    And Walz says the state will be putting in money tomorrow for summer school, so districts can prepare.
