WHAT IS PEDAL PAST POVERTY?
Pedal Past Poverty is a one-day and one-of-a-kind stationary bike race. This fun and energetic fundraiser is Partners for Affordable Housing’s signature event.
WHEN IS PEDAL PAST POVERTY?
The Seventh Annual Pedal Past Poverty will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2019. The event will once again be held at the Blue Gym at the Mankato YMCA.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
During the event, there are roughly 50 teams, ten riders each, organized by companies and individuals interested in ending the issues of homelessness and affordable housing. Teams then compete for prizes based on money raised and miles biked on race day.
I WANT TO GET A TEAM, WHAT DO I DO?
It’s easy, and FUN! Get a team together of ten riders. Each team is asked to fundraise or donate a minimum of $1000. Each person on your team rides a stationary bike for a portion of the time, so riders in any fitness level or age can participate!

WHO WILL BE THE REAL WINNERS?
Homeless families and individuals who are experiencing a temporary housing crisis.
Get ready to pedal to the limit at Partners for Affordable Housing’s 7th annual Pedal Past Poverty race slated for Saturday, February 23, 2019, from 9 am to 2 pm at the YMCA in Mankato, MN. This one-day, one-of-a-kind stationary bike race will incorporate over 45 teams of ten riders each, all competing for a broad array of prizes.
How It Works: Teams of 10 compete against each other on stationary bikes. Each rider pedals for 20 minutes. Each team is asked to raise at least $1,000. The goal is to raise money and to have fun, so you don’t have to be an expert cyclist to join in. Plenty of contestants take breaks during their ride!
Team Tips: Fundraisers like bake sales or restaurant nights are an easy way to raise team money. Create a team theme and bring costumes and/or props to the event. Create fun team challenges to drive fundraising efforts. Encourage team member family and friends to come to cheer you on at the event. Connect on social media and share your fundraising page.
Lack of affordable housing is a serious issue in Mankato. Mankato has one of the lowest supplies of affordable housing in the state of Minnesota. 54% of renters spent 30% or more on housing costs.
30% of Blue Earth and Nicollet County residents live at or below the poverty line. Poverty is a key contributing factor to a family losing their housing. Families at risk cannot afford the rent when the car breaks down, Mom’s hours are cut, or a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and extended hospital care is required. These individuals and families need somewhere to turn for help. Partners for Affordable Housing has been faithfully serving the Mankato area since 1985. We provide a stable and safe environment to our clients and offer supportive services, life skills training, resource connections, rental assistance, transportation, and home furnishings as our clients work towards gaining permanent affordable housing.
